Salafranca Calls for “Consensus” among Politicians, Praises Public”s Commitment to Democracy

Head of the European Commission to Monitor the Elections Jose Ignacio Salafranca on Monday urged political forces to open a new page and lauded the Lebanese for their "strong commitment to the democratic process."

At a press conference, Salafranca said: "The political scene shows Lebanon as a complex and diversified state. I hope that all political parties turn the page on past disagreements in order to build a common future for all the citizens based on consensus and cooperation."

Addressing the Lebanese public, he said: "I would like to commend the citizens, who went to polling stations in high numbers. I salute their patience and perseverance especially when faced with long queues in many centers."

Salafranca said the high turnout on Sunday indicated "the commitment of voters to the democratic process in the country. This is very encouraging."

In a statement, the Commission said "the parliamentary elections were contested in a polarized but generally peaceful environment within an improved legal framework which nevertheless needs further reform."

It expressed "satisfaction over the management of the process" adding there was no "lack in electoral material." The commission said the strong participation of observers contributed in "enhancing transparency."

"Clam and peace prevailed throughout the day. Security was under control and turnout was high," it said in a statement.

Salafranca said that the EU commission deployed more than 100 observers on elections day.
