Netanyahu Speech Could Drive Region into Dangerous Period

Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah on Monday warned that the latest speech by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu concerning the Middle East peace process could propel the region into a "dangerous period," and called on Arab leaders to reevaluate their positions.

Netanyahu”s speech "was a shock to all moderate Arab leaders," Nasrallah said in a speech on the occasion of the birth of Sayeda Fatima al-Zahraa.

"It (speech) has also foiled some bets that relied on the U.S. administration”s stand regarding peace in the region," Nasrallah added.

Netanyahu on Sunday endorsed for the first time the creation of a Palestinian state, provided it was demilitarized, after weeks of pressure from the United States which seeks a two-state settlement.

Nasrallah said Netanyahu”s speech "remind us of what Sharon said during the adoption of the Arab peace initiative when he said “the Arab initiative is not worth the ink it”s written with.”"

"And today Netanyahu is following in the same footsteps of his predecessor," Nasrallah stressed, adding that the Israeli PM”s speech could push the region into the "danger of naturalization and further displacement from the 1948 territories after his (Netanyahu) call for (recognizing) the Jewish state."
