March 14 Urges Judiciary Not to Succumb to Political Influences

The March 14 general secretariat said Wednesday it was surprised by a military court ruling to release a man accused of killing army helicopter pilot Samer Hanna and reaffirmed commitment to its electoral platform.

In a statement following its weekly meeting, March 14 urged the Lebanese judiciary to "rise above political pressures."

The court on Wednesday released Mustafa Hassan Muqdim, who "accidentally" shot and killed Hanna, was released Wednesday on a LL 10 million-bail.

March 14 said its commitment to its platform, under the banner of "Transition to the State," should be "translated into practical steps, especially in terms of forming a new government."

On Iran, the statement praised the Iranian people for their adherence to "freedom, reform and openness." March 14 hoped Iran would adopt a policy of moderation instead of "its hard-line policies and interferences in Lebanese and Arab internal affairs."

March 14 also paid tribute to late MP Walid Eido, who was assassinated two years ago on June 17.

The statement said Eido lost his life "defending Lebanon and the establishment of his sovereign, free and independent state."

"We pledge to continue the journey to achieve the noble goals set by the Cedar Revolution," it added.
