Justice minister rejects proportional representation
Justice Minister Ibrahim Najjar said in comments published Monday he was against an electoral law based on proportional representation, adding that such a law could have "drastic repercussions."
"I have never been convinced about an electoral law based on proportionality," Najjar said in an interview published in An-Nahar newspaper. He said such a system would involve the winning parties in the Parliament deriving from both the minority and majority.
"This leads to a disaster," he said. Najjar called on political leaders "to think carefully" before discussing a proportional electoral system, which he said would allow extremists to rule the country.
