Qabalan slams political meddling by religious figures
Vice President of the Higher Shiite Council Sheikh Abdel-Amir Qabalan slammed attempts by religious figures to interfere in politics. Qabalan said the role of religious leaders involves keeping a distance from political alignments and "the categorization of Lebanese," in reference to remarks made by Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir on the eve of the June 7 polls.
Qabalan added that rather than having clerics "clarify their stances they are reiterating them." He warned of the dangers tied to incitement against certain Lebanese groups, adding that "it reflected negatively on Lebanon." "We don”t see how one Lebanese group, which had made huge sacrifices to Lebanon, can become a danger to the entity," Qabalan said.
