I Will Work for Speedy Formation of Government
Former Speaker Nabih Berri pledged Wednesday to work for the formation of a cabinet as soon as possible voicing hope a session for his reelection will be the first step toward a national unity government.
Speaking to AFP Wednesday, Berri said: "I will work for the speedy formation of a government.
"If it were up to me (the task would be accomplished) within two weeks," he added.
Parliament will hold Thursday a session for the reelection of Berri, who is running uncontested for parliament president.
"God willing, the session will be the start of a Lebanese reunion and Lebanese national unity which must be translated (on the ground) by the formation of a government of national unity," he said.
Berri called for "a fusion of March 8 and March 14 into a national unity."
"By fusion, we are not talking about having two-third, one third, half, more or less in the government. It means the termination of this division and vertical fracture in the country," Berri clarified.
"When a country is marred with crises, it tries to assemble itself to confront them. Pulling together today is in the best interest of both the minority and the majority," he added.
