Aoun Insists Opposition Wants Proportional Representation “Not” Veto Power
MP Michel Aoun reiterated Wednesday opposition demands for proportional representation in a new government and reaffirmed his support for the reelection of Nabih Berri as speaker of parliament.
"Any team that does not have a two-third representation in parliament does not have the right to govern. We want proportional representation," Aoun said following the weekly meeting of his parliamentary bloc.
He said the opposition”s participation in the government "is a goodwill act on our part to prevent confrontations in the street."
He said the opposition will deliberate with candidates for the premiership "before deciding on our position."
"The opposition is united: either we enter the government or we don”t," he added.
Asked on a possible meeting with MP Walid Jumblat, Aoun replied: "Jumblat did not schedule any meeting with me. Some wanted to hamper the chances of such a meeting by repeatedly speaking of it beforehand."
