Lebanese Must Not Remain Exposed to Weapons
Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea expressed satisfaction Monday with a power-sharing formula that gave the opposition 10 seats and insisted President Michel Suleiman was "not resentful" over winning four seats.
"The majority is very comfortable with its place in the formula because there is a team that does not express opposition solely via political and democratic channels," Geagea said following talks with U.S. Ambassador Michele Sison in Maarab.
He said Sunday”s unrest was an "indicator of how far (the opposition team) will go if it was unsatisfied."
He said the power-sharing deal which gives the majority 16 seats "is not bad for us and very good for the other team."
Geagea said the opposition was "circulating reports that the president was resentful" of the deal which gave him only four seats. "He is not."
Geagea voiced hope that Hizbullah would take part in a future government saying the party”s participation "was still unconfirmed."
The LF leader stressed the Lebanese government "must be the sole authority to decide on peace and war. We will not accept any other way."
"Many leaders, including Speaker (Nabih) Berri said the (June 7) elections were a referendum over the resistance," he said.
"The referendum took place and the results showed the majority of Lebanese wants the decision to go to war or not to remain in the government”s power," Geagea added.
Asked about an inter-Christian reconciliation, he said: "Any attempt for rapprochement … is welcomed and especially between us and the Free Patriotic Movement. What is between is mere political disagreement not more."
