Qabbani: Violence in Beirut Was an Act of Aggression against State
Lebanon”s Grand Mufti, Sheikh Mohammed Rashid Qabbani, slammed on Monday the breakout of street violence in Beirut the day before and said the rioting was "an act of aggression" against the state.
In a statement, Qabbani said the unrest aimed to "mar" the process to form a government headed by Premier-designate Saad Hariri.
"Rioting on the streets of Beirut is an act of aggression against security in the country and against the state," he said.
Qabbani called for "the arrest and punishment of the aggressors" and urged security forces to "address any breach of security and to intensify efforts to protect the safety of citizens."
He also expressed concern that the unrest "opened past wounds."
