Jumblat Wants Speedy Formation of Unity Government to Face Israeli Threats
MP Walid Jumblat called Monday for the speedy formation of a national unity government in light of Israel”s increasing "extremist" policies.
In a weekly interview with al-Anbaa newspaper, Jumblat said: "The Middle East is facing great and enormous challenges made clearer each day in Israel”s extremist policy which has blocked all openings for a settlement in the region.
"As such the formation as soon as possible of a national unity government is a must," he added.
Jumblat said a future government must be one that enjoys "wide political representation based on partnership and that shuns monopoly or hindrance. This will allow it to address hurdles on all levels."
The Druze leader warned that Israel "will use any pretext, and even fabricate excuses, to justify any attack it is planning for against Lebanon and the Lebanese."
In light of the Israeli threat, political forces have a "responsibility to facilitate the designated premier”s task to form a new government by not placing impossible conditions such as demanding unrealistic share sizes or inventing the theories of proportional representation," he said.
Jumblat added proportional representation "has never been adopted in Lebanon in the formation of governments."
