Gueant in Damascus, Talks to Focus on Lebanon, Region
Claude Gueant, the secretary general of the French presidency, and President Nicolas Sarkozy”s advisor David Levitte arrived in Damascus on Tuesday to meet with Syrian officials.
The French envoys are expected to discuss among other things the Lebanese situation.
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier will also visit Damascus on July 7.
The European-Syrian contacts will deal with the situation in Lebanon, the Middle East peace process and the partnership between the EU and Syria.
French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner will also head a meeting of French ambassadors in the Middle East in Damascus July 11-12.
Pan-Arab daily al-Hayat said the French government nominated foreign ministry spokesman Eric Chevalier to the post of ambassador to Syria.
