Gemayel Wants to Reconnect with Syria
Phalange Party leader Amin Gemayel said he is "convinced that we need to reconnect with Syria," but added that he preferred that the new Lebanese government carry out negotiations with Damascus on key issues.
"There is a problem in having relations with Syria given that a certain generation got to know Syria only through its bad practices in Lebanon," Gemayel said in a late Tuesday interview with Future TV.
"There is no serious Syrian effort for restoring the relationship (with Lebanon)," Gemayel believed. "They want a certificate of innocence and we reject this."
He accused the Hizubllah-led March 8 coalition of pushing for "federalism and confederacy" through their veto power demand.
Gemayel stressed there was no dispute with Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblat.
"Jumblat is my friend. We struggled together. What binds us is much more than what separates us. There is no problem if we have different views," he said.
