Israeli Chief of Staff Rules Out Confrontation with Hizbullah
The Israeli army is closely monitoring the situation along the border with Lebanon though no eruption of hostilities is expected on the front, Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi said Tuesday.
"At the moment, there is quiet all along the border," Ashkenazi told recruits of the Kfir infantry brigade during a visit to the Israeli army”s main induction center at Tel Hashomer.
"There was an incident which to our understanding was an explosion of a weapons cache belonging to Hizbullah, which is being handled by UNIFIL and the Lebanese government," Haaretz daily quoted him as saying about the blast at Khirbet Selm two weeks ago.
"We view the event with gravity, but we do not anticipate a disruption of quiet in the area," the army chief said.
He added the blast proves Israeli claims that Hizbullah is strengthening its fighting capabilities in communities in southern Lebanon.
