Saniora Hails Drop of Veto Power, Says Change Comes Through Constitutional Institutions
Caretaker Premier Fouad Saniora on Sunday described as an "achievement" consent by the opposition to drop demands for veto power in the new cabinet.
"The new cabinet should benefit from what we went through in the previous government because the experience of veto power led to many obstructions," Saniora said during a ceremony honoring him and MPs Najib Miqati and Imad al-Hout.
"I believe that those who were defending this idea (veto power) have in one way or an other given it up. This is considered an achievement," he added.
The caretaker PM also called for the continued implementation of the Taef accord. "This will eventually consolidate Lebanon”s strength in developing itself and moving forward."
Saniora said change can only take place through constitutional institutions.
