Damascus Would Distance Itself from Hizbullah after Peace Treaty

Syria will most likely distance itself from Iran, Hizbullah, and Palestinian groups after it signs a peace treaty with Israel, senior Israeli army intelligence official Yossi Beiditz said Tuesday.

Israel”s Ynet News said Beiditz made the remarks during a briefing to the Knesset”s Defense and Foreign Affairs Committee.

"In the estimate of the IDF Intelligence Branch, should Syria encounter a dilemma in the aftermath of a deal with Israel, it will be willing to cool off its ties with Iran, Hizbullah, and the Palestinian groups," Ynet quoted him as saying.

However, Beiditz noted that Damascus is still part of the axis of evil, while it is striving to improve its ties with the United States and with the moderate Arab camp. "Syria is willing to accept an agreement on its terms only, with an emphasis on withdrawal to the June 1967 borders," he said.

Beiditz added that despite recent developments in Iran, Tehran continues to transfer weapons to Syria, Hamas, and Hizbullah.
