Roumieh Prison Riot after Inmate Snatches Keys, Opens 21 Cells
Lebanese authorities put down a weekend prison riot at Roumieh jail after an inmate snatched the keys from the warden, opened 21 cells and demanded prisoners to set fire to their bed mats.
The mutiny took place around 10:35 pm Sunday when prisoner Fawzi Shahrour took the jail guard by surprise and snatched his keys.
Shahrour went up to the upper floor where convicted criminals are held, opened 21 cells and demanded inmates to set fire to their bed mats.
The riot was swiftly brought under control after security forces, led by Fouhood Special Squad, stepped in.
Fire firefighters, meanwhile, put out the blaze.
Interior Minister Ziad Baroud followed up on the mutiny.
