Judge Howard Morrison Resigns from Special Tribunal for Lebanon

Judge Howard Morrison has resigned from the Special Tribunal for Lebanon effective 14 July 2009.

Morrison, in his letter of resignation to the STL President Judge Antonio Cassese, said his resignation was due to his appointment by the U.N. Secretary-General as Judge of the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, effective 31 August 2009.

Cassese congratulated Morrison on his new appointment and expressed the STL”s regret at his departure.

The STL has requested the U.N. Secretary-General to take the necessary steps to appoint Judge Morrison”s replacement.

Morrison was selected by the United Nations Secretary-General as a judge for the Special Tribunal of Lebanon and was sworn into office on 9 March 2009. His appointment had not yet been made public. Morrison has served as counsel before domestic courts and international criminal tribunals and as circuit judge in the United Kingdom.

Morrison”s departure will not affect the day-to-day operations of the STL and will not result in any delays to the judicial process.
