Tension in Bqaasafrin following Killing of Young Man
Tension hightened in Bqaasafrin in north Lebanon after assailants shot and killed a young man and wounded his brother inside their shop overnight and their family accused former parliamentary candidate Mujahid Shandab”s men of being behind the attack.
The daily An-Nahar Monday, which carried the report, identified the victim as Ali Daher, 24.
It said his brother, Bilal, also in his twenties, was taken to hospital for treatment.
An Nahar said Daher”s family refused to take delivery of Ali”s body until the perpetrators, whom his folks said belonged to Shandab, had been arrested.
Meanwhile, angry residents and the victim”s relatives headed toward Shandab”s house in an attempt to set it ablaze but were prevented by the Lebanese army.
When the crowd tried to raid the house, troops opened fire, wounding several of them.
An Nahar said among the injured were Nidal Kanj and Ali Kanj.
At this point, protestors set two police vehicles on fire and cut electric powers to the town where militiamen presence was reported amid soaring tension.
