EU foreign minister arrives as part of Mideast tour
European Union Foreign Minister Javier Solana arrived in Beirut on Monday evening as part of a Middle East tour.
A statement issued by the European Commission to Lebanon said Solana will hold talks on Tuesday with President Michel Sleiman, Speaker Nabih Berri, caretaker Prime Minister Fouad Siniora, Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri, and Foreign Minister Fawzi Salloukh.
It said that Solana’s trip “takes place in the context of the major push by the international community,” in the direction of a regional peace. Solana is scheduled to visit Syria, Israel and the Palestinian territories prior to Lebanon, which will be followed by a stop in Cairo.
