Majority, Opposition Hail Assad Visit to Saudi
Leaders from across the political Lebanese spectrum have hailed a visit by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to Saudi Arabia where he surprisingly showed up at the opening ceremony of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology.
Caretaker Prime Minister Fouad Saniora, in remarks published Thursday by the daily an-Nahar, described as a "very good initiative" Assad”s unexpected visit to Jeddah.
He also considered that Assad”s presence in Jeddah was "an important step in strengthening Arab solidarity."
Phalange party leader Amin Gemayel told the An-Nahar that he welcomes any Arab rapprochement.
"No doubt, there is this rapprochement will have an impact on the Lebanese arena and should defuse tension," Gemayel thought.
