U.S. Reiterates Cabinet Formation is “Strictly” Lebanese Issue
Sources at the U.S. embassy in Beirut told Naharnet that the continued position of the United States is that the "shape and composition" of the Lebanese government is strictly a Lebanese issue.
"We hope that the current political impasse will be resolved quickly and that Lebanon will form a government in a manner that respects its Constitutional process," the source said.
The source called on "all friends of Lebanon to support the government formation process."
The Hizbullah-led Opposition had accused U.S. Ambassador Michele Sison of making a move to block government formation.
Free Patriotic Movement member Salim Salhab on Monday accused the United States without naming it, saying "some external powers do not want a government at the moment, and this was clear in the actions taken by the U.S. Ambassador."
"If the Lebanese agree on a government, we can overcome the American behavior that does not want a government at the time being," Salhab added.
