Assad Calls Suleiman Confirming Damascus Summit Eagerness for Unity Government
Syrian President Bashar Assad on Friday contacted Lebanese President Michel Suleiman to inform him that both Syria and Saudi Arabia were "keen on seeing a national unity government that reflects and guarantees Lebanese cooperation … to end any attempts to disrupt security," a statement issued by Suleiman”s office said.
The Syrian-Saudi summit had been "constructive," the Lebanese presidency said in a statement.
The Syrian President reiterated his support for Suleiman”s consensus role in the Lebanese political scene.
In response, Suleiman thanked Assad and appreciated the summit”s stance on the Lebanese situation.
Two different communiques regarding the Syrian-Saudi summit”s view on Lebanon were issued, but both called for forming a national unity government.
Prominent sources in the Lebanese opposition told An-Nahar daily that "the birth of the cabinet needs a local effort. The summit”s results need three or four days to be put into action". The sources expressed skepticism regarding the presence of a resolution to form the cabinet so far.
