Report: U.S. Stops German Ship with Iranian Arms for Syria or Hizbullah
U.S. troops have found eight containers full of ammunition allegedly headed to Syria from Iran on board a German-owned freighter in the Gulf of Suez, German newspaper Der Spiegel reported.
According to the report, investigators suspect that the arms were part of an Iranian shipment bound for either Syria or Hizbullah.
Der Spiegel said Monday that the U.S. soldiers boarded the freighter Hansa India in the Gulf of Suez early October and discovered seven containers full of 7.62 millimeter ammunition suitable for Kalashnikov rifles.
An eighth container was full of cartridges that could be used for the manufacture of additional rounds, the report added.
Two U.S. warships halted the Hansa India after receiving a tip-off from intelligence services.
Following an intervention by the German government, the U.S. allowed the ship to dock in Malta, where the containers carrying ammunition were secured.
