Authorities Recover Stolen Vehicles from Southern Suburbs, Theft Linked to Drug Trade
A security source told An Nahar that most of the 16 stolen cars that Interior Minister Ziad Baroud handed over to their owners were recovered by security forces from Beirut”s southern suburbs.
Baroud delivered the vehicles to their owners at the interior ministry on Friday.
The source said the 16 vehicles are the first batch of 65 cars stolen in the country. He told An Nahar that on Oct. 19 security forces were able to recover the car of MP Nuhad Mashnouq”s daughter and arrested the two assailants 3 days after their theft.
Security forces later arrested more people who confessed to stealing 65 vehicles for the purpose of selling the stolen vehicles to drug lords in return for drugs.
The source added that authorities stopped more than 1,000 illegal motorcycles in Beirut”s southern suburbs following cooperation by residents and a political decision by Hizbullah not to cover up for culprits.
