STL calls attorneys to join defense team
Head of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon’s (STL) defense office Francois Roux gave a lecture titled “International tribunals and the STL” at the conference hall of the Beirut Bar Association of Friday.
Roux explained that when the UN General Assembly issues a decision to establish an international criminal court, “this should be considered a political decision, and such a court is formed to impose a punishment, and in such a case it is the responsibility of the judiciary to impose justice, and the defense to practice its independent role.”
He added that the case of the STL was “peculiar,” since this is would be “the first time that an international court will deal with the crime of terrorism.” “The STL will then set the foundations for future courts dealing with similar issues,” he said. Roux said the role of the defense regarding the STL “is very important especially with the absence of an investigative judge.” Roux also called on more attorneys to submit applications to join the STL’s defense team.
