LF-Phalange alliance thrashes FPM-Marada in NDU elections

The Lebanese Forces (LF)-Phalange Party alliance scored a sweeping victory against the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM)-Marada alliance, by securing 29 out of 33 seats reserved for the student committees at the Notre Dame University (NDU) elections on Friday. Similarly to every other university in the country, the NDU elections often mirror the sectarian power struggles in society, and their results are largely used by various Lebanese political groups to assert their popularity.

Earlier this week, students supported by the March 14 Forces coalition also won the majority of seats in the Student Representative Committee elections of the American University of Beirut.

Two electoral lists each comprised of 33 candidates representing the different parties of the majority and the opposition competed on Friday for 33 seats distributed over seven faculties across university campus as students headed in large numbers to cast ballots from 8:30 a.m.

The elections were held under the supervision of Father Salim Raji, head of student affairs office, and were assisted by Ziad Fahed along with representatives of the university administration and academic committees who guaranteed the management of the polls in accordance with the university regulations and under a calm atmosphere.

Head of the Public Relations office Souhail Matar said the students demonstrated constructive competition given their commitment to electoral laws and university regulations which proved to be a new step forward toward democracy.
