Israeli Withdrawal from Ghajar “Not a Topic for Public Discussion”
UNIFIL Director of Political and Civil Affairs Milos Strugar stressed that the issue of Israeli withdrawal from the northern part of Ghajar village is not a "topic for public discussion."
In a press conference held in Tyre on Tuesday, Strugar said that Israel was obliged to withdraw from Ghajar under Resolution 1701, adding that the situation in Ghajar was unique where the "blue line" divides the village into two parts, one in Golan and another in Lebanon.
Strugar added that UNIFIL suggested facilitating the withdrawal of the Israeli army from the northern part of the village as it was informed by the Lebanese authorities of acceptance for that suggestion. He also said that Israel informed the U.N. Secretary-General of its willingness to discuss withdrawal of its troops from al-Ghajar.
UNIFIL”s top official hoped that Israel would deliver shortly an official response "in the right direction" that guarantees the withdrawal of the Israeli army from Ghajar.
Strugar refused to discuss the content of the suggestion presented by UNIFIL to both Lebanese and Israeli sides to facilitate the withdrawal of Israeli army from Ghajar.
He added that once an agreement is reached, it would be declared "since any public discussion would affect the region negatively."
