Abolishing Sectarianism Has Been Tried Useless Times
Maronite Patriarch Mar Nasrallah Butros Sfeir commented on Speaker Nabih Berri”s speech regarding sectarianism claiming that it has been inflicted in Lebanese souls since the French colonization. Sfeir said that the only solution to the issue would be "abolishing it from the souls before the texts ; in case it”s a success then it is welcome otherwise our reservations remain".
Sfeir upon arriving from his trip to Rome on Tuesday at the airport did not seem too optimistic regarding Berri”s suggestion of forming a higher body to abolish political sectarianism instead of abolishing it right away claiming that "many bodies were created before with no positive outcome".
Concerning Jumblat”s suggestion regarding [sectarian] rotation in the presidential seat Sfeir referred the matter to the "Lebanese nation who has to decide".
On this front, Sfeir welcomed the meeting that took place between the leader of Change and Reform bloc MP Michel Aoun and PSP leader Walid Jumblat at Baabda Palace and applauded any reconciliation between any of the Lebanese parties stressing that President Michel Suleiman is capable of bringing unspeaking parts together.
Regarding his sponsorship to the reconciliatory meeting between Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea and General Michel Aoun Sfeir answered "it”s not solely a duty of ours but that of all the politicians as well".
Sfeir considered Hariri”s visit to Damascus the right step. "Lebanon has to maintain good relations with all countries especially those closest to it," he said.
