I Urge Berri to Extract Call for Eliminating Political Sectarianism
Lebanese Forces bloc MP George Adwan addressed deputies during Thursday’s parliamentary session, urging Speaker Nabih Berri to withdraw his call for a national committee to eliminate political sectarianism.
He explained that Berri’s call would abolish the equal shares between Christians and Muslims and added that this issue creates “annoyance and tension.”
He called for an electoral law according in which the Christians have an electoral say in getting their MPs into parliament, regardless of their sect.
Adwan also called on the Constitutional Council to re-explain to the public the constitution and clarify the disputed issues in the document.
He said that Article 6 of the Ministerial Statement – which pertains to Hezbollah and its weapons – was never agreed on, highlighting that the statement is one of “settlement.”
“The Resistance is a general concept and does not concern a particular party,” said Adwan, stressing, “It is the people’s will to confront occupation, but only when the state collapses or in areas where there is no state.”
The MP said that there is a contradiction between “the existence of weapons outside state control and the existence of the state,” and is the constitutional duty that the country imposes its authority on Lebanese territory.
The international resolutions preserve Lebanon and facilitate its confrontation with Israel, Adwan pointed out. “We should commit to the international resolutions, especially UN Security Council Resolution 1701.”
He commented on Lebanese-Syrian relations, calling for a “balanced” relationship that serves the interests of both countries. However, he added, “there should not be relations between individuals and Damascus.”
The pattern of visits to Damascus and the extradition notices by the Syrian judiciary against Lebanese public figures – is not relieving, said Adwan.
He also said that Justice Minister Ibrahim Najjar should launch an internal inspection into the judiciary.
The MP commented on the issue of the displaced, saying that he hopes the issue will soon be resolved.
