We want Gradual Contact with Hizbullah
British Foreign office spokesman Barry Marston welcomed a visit by Prime Minister Saad Hariri to Damascus, saying "it would enhance ties between the two countries."
"Relations between Lebanon and Syria are very important for the two countries," Marston said.
He said contacts were ongoing between the U.K. and Syria "on issues of mutual concern."
On Hizbullah, Marston said Britain is committed to a policy of openness with the group.
"We are maintaining gradual contact with Hizbullah that would serve our interests and the national interests of the Lebanese and based on our ability to influence Hizbullah to play a positive role in Lebanon," he said. His remarks were translated into English by Naharnet.
"We understand the importance of the key parties in the Lebanese political structure and the role they play in Cabinet and Parliament.
"At the same time, we support full implementation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701 so that weapons in Lebanon would be placed under government responsibility," Marston said.
