May 29th: Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay become the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest, on Tenzing Norgay’s (adopted) 39th birthday, in 1953.
Before descending, they stopped at the summit long enough to take photographs and to bury some sweets and a small cross in the snow.
