International Women’s Day, one day a year to celebrate the better half of the human population. It all started in the early twentieth century when women decided it’s time to fight back for what they believed they deserved whether it be a better payday or on a grander scale of things, universal suffrage.
Woman have struggled in both hemispheres to be heard, in some nations they were successful, in others no such luck so far. In many parts of the world, living breathing females are condemned to live through their existence as second-grade citizens in their own countries. International Woman’s Day is necessary for all those females out there still struggling, to show and remind them that some have indeed made it. It’s only a matter of time for true equality to prevail in all nations. March 8 commemorates all the achievements of women with no attention spared to race, religion, nationality or even age. The Arab world has had its fair share of womanly strife but is hopefully on the way of change to a better environment suited for both genders. Lebanon is also having its own little metaphoric battle for equality with more than one hundred females running for predominantly male elections. The female candidates have increased from a mere dozen the last time around to over a hundred now. The upcoming elections are a hopefully a game changer for the many generations to come. Maybe one day Lebanon will witness a parliament entirely made up of strong independent women? As Beyoncé once said, who runs the world? Girls. As simple as that.
