Today’s report highlights the stand of the Lebanese Forces on the defense strategy.
This is an issue that topped the list once again, specifically following President Aoun’s announcement on the eve of the Rome 2 conference; stating that talks on the defense strategy will be resumed after the parliamentary elections. It is noteworthy to mention that Minister of the Interior Nohad El Mashnouk had said something to that end a few months earlier.
What is significant is that in the ending statement of the Rome 2 conference, there was a clear note to that end – welcoming the president’s statement of March 12 in which he appealed to the Lebanese political parties to resume talks on the national defense strategy.
Within this framework, the Lebanese forces proclaims the following:
First, the Lebanese forces will respond to the president’s invitation to resume talks on the defense strategy following the parliamentary elections and will definitely be among the attendees.
Second, the Lebanese Forces will make sure that the new attempt with president Aoun differ from the discussions which proved fruitless and where talks seemed to be the end and not the means to reach an agreement on the defense strategy that would restore to the state its rights.
Third, the Lebanese Forces will insist on the state regaining its strategic decision concerning war and peace. Furthermore, the Lebanese Forces holds on fast to confining all military weapons to the Lebanese state alone, as there is no defense strategy outside the Lebanese constitution, the Ta’ef accord and the Arab and International decrees related namely to resolutions 1559 and 1701, where the final say is exclusive to the Lebanese state.
