On the 23rd of March, 1994, minister of information at the time came out to announce the dissolution of the Lebanese Forces. The motive was threefold.
The first motive was to eliminate the main political force capable of preventing the Syrian regime from devouring Lebanon.
The second motive aimed at teaching all the rest a lesson; namely, if the Lebanese Forces was dissolved and its leader imprisoned, what would happen to us?
The third motive was to place all of Lebanon under Syrian dominance, eliminating any freedoms, and proclaiming the beginning of the Syrian era.
Those who took that decision believed that the darkness of the prison cell would throw the Lebanese Forces into darkness. Alas to them, the light emanating from that cell restored the right to its rightful owner and blinded the occupation army out of Lebanon. And, as if that wasn’t enough, that same light placed those who rejoiced the dissolution of the Lebanese Forces where they duly belong.
In memory of this event, one may ponder three basic morals.
First: If the Lebanese Forces were to change its principles and beliefs to avoid dissolution and imprisonment, the Lebanese Forces would have signed the death certificate for its cause, its spirit, and testimony.
Second: If the Lebanese Forces had surrendered, it would have disappeared from the geographical and historical records as well as from the people’s consciousness.
Third: Struggle for freedom and sovereignty will reign sooner or later; and this is exactly what happened: the Lebanese Forces prevailed and the occupation has left.
It remains to say that the Lebanese Forces is an exact duplicate of Lebanon, not only in its struggle to safeguard the identity and role of this country but also in its formation. As Lebanon has its constitution and charter, so does the Lebanese Forces, where the constitution is the party’s rules and regulations, and its charter is the cause embodied by the Lebanese Forces in the conscience of the people.
