Guéant: Our dialogue with Syria is about Lebanon
Elysée Secretary General Claude Guéant told Al-Hayat daily that France is making efforts to develop a dialogue with Syria about Lebanon and other regional issues. “I hope Syria will announce the establishment of diplomatic relations with Lebanon,” he said.
“President Sarkozy will accept Damascus’s invitation to visit it if the beginnings of the dialogue with Syria are fruitful,” he added.
He also noted that there will not be any compromise over the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.
“I am confident that France cannot find solutions alone to the problems in the region,” Guéant told the daily, noting that Syria must be part of this process, and dialogue must be undertaken with Damascus.
Guéant said that the invitation of the Syrian president to France’s Bastille Day celebrations was part of the package of invitations sent to the presidents who are participating in the Mediterranean Union Summit on July 12 and 13 in Paris.
