2009 Elections Cannot Be Held if Hizbullah Remains Armed
MP Antoine Saad said on Sunday the 2009 Parliamentary elections "cannot be held as long as a certain faction remains armed and uses its weapons to threaten other factions."
Saad, a member of Walid Jumblat”s Democratic Gathering, told representatives of the civil society in the western sector of the Bekaa valley, he doubts Syrian intentions towards Lebanon and said the Damascus regime "practices a deceptive policy."
He said President Michel Suleiman was "serious and responsible" in his efforts to work out normal relations between Lebanon and Syria.
Damascus, he said, is seeking to "gain time in the hopes of getting rid of the international tribunal" that would try suspects in the 2005 assassination of ex-Premier Rafik Hariri.
Saad called for "backing the Lebanese Army … by a political decision regarding confronting any sort of terror."
