Sarkozy discusses Lebanon with the Pope

 

French President Nicolas Sarkozy stressed during his visit to Pope Benedictus XVI the need to drive Lebanon out of the political destabilization that is gripping the country.

 

“I have discussed with his Holiness the situation in Lebanon and informed him of the discussions I had with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and other parties concerned with the crisis in Lebanon,” Sarkozy told the Vatican radio.

 

Commenting on the possibility of mutual cooperation between the Vatican diplomats and the Maronite Church in Lebanon, Sarkozy said, “The Maronite Patriarch has played a major role in consecrating reconciliation between different factions of Lebanese society.”

 

“The voice of the Pope is heard all over the world, especially in Lebanon, where he relies on those who are faithful to him in this country,” Sarkozy added.
