Lebanese Forces is a Powerful Well-Represented Christian Party
Lebanese Forces MP George Adwan said there was a campaign against the LF that would intensify and undermine its future objectives. He said the LF’s position in the lead-up to the 2009 parliamentary elections, however, remained strong.
In an interview with the Free Lebanon radio station on Saturday, Adwan said that the Christian community would define the parliamentary majority during the 2009 elections.
“The Lebanese Forces is the most powerful and well-represented Christian party, and this is a proven fact,” he said, acknowledging that the Lebanese Forces may discuss the possibility of forging alliances with independent candidates in order to gain a majority during the elections.
“I call on the people of Lebanon to benefit from the electoral season. They should accept the money offered to them and vote upon their convictions,” Adwan said.
Adwan said there should be an exchange of visits between Lebanese and Syrian officials, and that Syrian Interior Minister Bassam Abdel Majid should visit Lebanon.
“All these visits should take place after the establishment of diplomatic ties and the exchange of embassies,” he said. Adwan also called for the disbanding of the Syrian-Lebanese Higher Council, suggesting that otherwise bilateral relations would remain unchanged.
“Everyone should know that the situation changed after 2005,” he added.
“The extremist group Fatah al-Islam began with Syrian direct monitoring and managing, and ended when it constituted a threat to Damascus,” he said, asking why Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had not chosen to form an Arab committee to investigate this issue during his current period of Arab League leadership.
“If Telecommunications Minister Gebran Bassil wanted reform, he should not start by carrying out a violation. I call on him to present proof about corruption in his ministry and not to waste time,” Adwan added.
