Pierre’s Assassins May Have Been Fatah Al-Islam
Sami Gemayel, the coordinator of the Kataeb Party’s central committee, said that the militant group Fatah al-Islam may have planned and executed the assassination of his brother, Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel.
In an interview with the Kuwaiti daily Al-Seyassah on Monday, Gemayel said that “when the Kataeb party was influential, Lebanon too was strong. And no one dared to take over the state and assault the Christians as has happened lately.”
“When they sensed the strength of the party and Pierre’s role in unifying the Kataeb they assassinated him and when they saw that the party continued to be strong they assassinated Antoine Ghanem,” Gemayel continued.
He added that “Kataeb will remain targeted because we will not compromise.”
Asked about his political future, Gemayel said he only looked forward “to further bolstering the Kataeb party.”
When pressed as to whether he would run in the 2009 parliamentary elections, Gemayel said that “the [Kataeb party’s] political office will decide on this issue.”
