Qabbani Condemns Syrian Release Of Criminals Rather Than Political Detainees
Future MP Mohammad Qabbani condemned the violence in Jdeide on Monday and called on political forces to control things and to cooperate with Security Forces “with action rather than words.”
In an interview with Future News on Tuesday, Qabbani also said that releasing people imprisoned in criminal cases from Syria was not a political victory; on the contrary, they should be handed in to the Lebanese judicial system. A move that would be a political victory, he said, would be releasing political detainees and missing persons.
Qabbani also said that the Taif Accord was more than a door to consensus, “it is consensus in itself.” He said that Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun’s request to amend it was a political move. “The problem with the Taif accord is that we did not fully implement it. When it is implemented, we will see that it is the best agreement,” he said.
On the upcoming parliamentary elections, Qabbani said that no matter how much Syria denied it, it could not help but interfere in electoral issues and it would use all means to make the results beneficial for its allies. He added that Syria would pressure its allies to allow Aoun to choose the Christian MPs.
Qabbani said that weapons inside the refugee camps should be controlled and the relationship between the Lebanese state and the Palestinian Authority representatives should be strengthened.
