Aoun Will Pay a Price for Visiting Syria
March 14 General Secretariat Coordinator Fares Soueid said that, in terms of domestic popularity, Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun “didn’t benefit from his visit to Syria…because it was a moral defeat for his bases in Beirut.”
After meeting with Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea on Wednesday, Soueid said that the Syrian regime was trying to escape pressure from the West by sending signals to them that relations with Lebanon were good.
Such efforts would not succeed, Soueid said, because Aoun’s visit “will not allow Syria to torpedo the Special Tribunal, which will start its work in March, and the demarcation of the borders, which is a demand of the western community…[nor will the Syrian regime be able to] cancel the issue of the political detainees in Syrian prisons.”
“The Lebanese are asking about the price Aoun paid or will pay [for this visit] but I think the price has already been paid and will continue to be paid, day after day,” he said.
