Nayla Tueni Along Gebran”s Path in Beirut-1 Elections
Nayla Tueni, daughter of slain MP Gebran Tueni and deputy manager of an-Nahar newspaper, on Thursday announced that she would compete in the parliamentary elections in Beirut”s first constituency as a "non-partisan" candidate backing March 14 and the Cedar revolution.
Tueni, accompanied by her grandfather MP Ghassan, made the announcement in a statement to reporters after meeting Greek Orthodox Archbishop Elias Aoude at his seat in Beirut.
"Today we remember Gebran, who had sought the Archbishop”s blessing and declared his candidacy (for the 2005 elections) from Here," Ms Tueni said.
"With God”s blessing we would pursue Gebran”s path," she added.
"Enjoying the backing of the community is the most important (challenge). If I gain the backing of (political) parties that would be a positive development," she added.
In answering a question about the target of her election campaign, Ms Tueni said she would hold a press conference to declare her policy statement "topped by issues of interest to Ashrafiyeh, Saifi and Rmeil … and certainly in line with the cedar revolution."
"Gebran Tueni was a co-founder of the Cedar revolution and he was martyred while serving the cause. Today, we are responsible for this cause and we have to proceed with it," she concluded.
