Najjar explains Special Tribunal’s mechanism
In an interview with LBC on Wednesday, Justice Minister Ibrahim Najjar said Special Tribunal prosecutor Judge Daniel Bellemare’s interviews with Lebanese newspapers on Wednesday dealt with the mechanism of conduct stated by the court’s rules.
He said the Special Tribunal would decide which suspects and witnesses would be transferred from Lebanon to The Hague, as well as what mechanism should be utilized in the transfer.
Najjar stated that no timeline was set on indictments, noting that Bellemare had stated they would be issued upon the presence of sufficient evidence. He approved of Bellemare’s message to the Lebanese, which called for separating political bickering from the tribunal.
On the wiretapping issue, the minister pointed out that the concerned ministries meaning the Justice, Interior and Defense were ordered to prepare all relevant laws so as to adopt them as soon as possible, after the wiretapping room would be established in the Telecom Ministry.
