Mouawad makes way for son
Zghorta MP Nayla Mouawad said she won”t be a candidate for the 2009 parliamentary elections, adding her son Michel will be running allied with Jawad Boulos and Youssef al-Doueihy.
In an interview with the daily el-Shark published on Thursday, Mouawad said she had met with Marada leader Suleiman Franjieh in 2006 and together agreed to keep Zghorta "neutral" and far removed from any violence emanating from political disputes.
She said Christians in Lebanon have to safeguard the Maronite Patriarchate, the presidency and the military. Regarding the issue of a centrist parliamentary bloc, Mouawad said the Lebanese Constitution gives citizens the right to vote for a candidate they deem suitable. Mouawad added that "historically" the president of the republic had been known to have a parliamentary bloc.
