Aoun Fearful Of Expatriates Vote
In a statement on Tuesday, Lebanese Forces MP Elie Keyrouz said that Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun feared losing some seats in the upcoming parliamentary elections if Lebanese expatriates voted, since, he said, they disapproved of Aoun’s choices and alliances.
Keyrouz questioned why Aoun and his movement were “making a fuss” when the mayors facilitated the emigrants’ voting, “as if the law forbids this and as if [the mayors] are doing something illegal,” while Aoun and some of his bloc’s MPs always called for restoring emigrants’ rights to their nationality and vote.
Keyrouz said that the emigrant rights to vote and to nationality were a matter subject to national consensus and could not be achieved simply because one party willed it.
