Elections will consolidate Lebanon’s independence, sovereignty and civil peace

Minister of State Wael Abu Faour said at a political meeting on Tuesday in the Chouf that the upcoming parliamentary elections would be a challenge to consolidate Lebanon’s independence, sovereignty and civil peace.

He said the elections would also preserve all achievements, such as the withdrawal of Syrian troops and its intelligence services, the restoration of a democratic system in Lebanon, the establishment of diplomatic ties between Lebanon and Syria, as well as the launching of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.

Abu Faour said he hoped the border demarcation would be achieved soon without any procrastination and called for preventing any Palestinian arms outside the refugee camps, as stated in the recommendations of the 2006 national dialogue.

He commented on the Syrian-Israeli peace negotiations and Lebanon’s role, saying the Lebanese government had the sole authority to speak at the country’s behalf. Abu Faour said Lebanon became independent and “is a partner in the Arab-Israeli conflict at its own will and by Lebanese consensus.”
