My candidacy is not an attempt to challenge anyone

In an interview with Al-Liwaa daily on Tuesday, Nadim Gemayel, a candidate for the Maronite parliamentary seat in the Beirut I district, said his candidacy was not to challenge anyone, but rather it was a natural thing to maintain the path initiated by his father, slain President-elect Bachir Gemayel.

“Is state building, living with dignity, freedom, ensuring security, peace, working to stop the youth’s immigration  and restoring confidence in the state a challenge or outdated slogans from the past?” he asked.

Gemayel also said that the upcoming parliamentary elections had a “Lebanese flavor… however, it is natural that Syria will have a role in them, especially since March 8 alliance is spiritually and mentally linked to it.” He said any victory for Syria’s allies in Lebanon was a victory for Syria.

He said there was no problem with his competitors in the Achrafieh district. “Our direct problem is not with the Free Patriotic Movement, but in the alliance and political line chosen by the FPM.”

Gemayel said the Kataeb party and the Lebanese Forces were trying to reach an agreement over the election nominations, noting that it would need more time. “The agreement will be reached before, during and after the elections.”
