March 8 is planning a coup if Aoun loses elections
March 14 alliance member Elias al-Zoghbi said in an interview on Sunday that there were reports that the March 8 alliance, led by Hezbollah, wanted to carry out a coup and topple President Michel Sleiman and replace him with Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun if the FPM lost the elections.
Zoghbi explained that the reports said March 8, led by Hezbollah, had issued clear threats, directly or indirectly, to March 14 leaders saying that if they did not guarantee at least 20 FPM parliamentary seats outside the South and Bekaa districts, Hezbollah would carry out a military operation on the night of June 7. Such military operations, they reported, would not be similar to the May 7 events last year but would be intended to control the state, topple Sleiman, replace him with Aoun, form a new cabinet, and control all the state’s civil and military institutions.
Zoghbi said an armed coup would fail in Lebanon and advised the planners to reconsider their calculations and learn from their previous adventures. He also advised some “crawling Christians” to stop playing the role the “Trojan Horse” because they would turn out to be the “primary losers.”
