Election Supervision Committee Unveils 153 Media Violations
The interior ministry”s election supervision committee revealed after a meeting on Saturday that it found 153 media violations of the electoral law in April alone.
The committee also said that in the next few days it will send notices to violating media outlets. It warned that the committee will refer electoral law violators to the judiciary if they continue with their violations.
"We hope that media outlets will fully abide with the implementation of the law," said Ghassan Abu Alwan, who heads the committee.
"We will send the notices and we might refer violators to the judiciary," he stressed.
The committee has warned against the escalation of political rhetoric among politicians and the media. It has also said that media outlets were prohibited from supporting or campaigning for any candidate or electoral list.
The committee has also warned against committing libel and slander against any candidate or electoral list.
In his turn, head of the Press Syndicate Mohammed Baalbaki, who also attended the meeting, said that it is the duty of the Lebanese press to abide by the law and ethics of the profession, including avoiding escalation and news fabrication.
