Tribunal sentences spy for Israel to 10 years in jail
A military tribunal sentenced Mohammad Bassam to a 10-year prison term Friday for collaborating with Israel and organizing a cell of operatives.
Bassam, accused of marking the homes of Hizbullah militants in southern Lebanon, was apprehended following the 2006 summer war with Israel.
During the trial, he retracted prior confessions in which he had fingered other so-called collaborators. Over the last several weeks, Lebanese security forces have detained a number of Lebanese and at least one Palestinian on suspicion of spying for the state of Israel. On Wednesday, six suspects were charged with collaborating with Israel by a military tribunal, bringing the number of alleged spies to 17.
